What IS my job anyway?!?

On my way home from work earlier this week I was feeling overwhelmed with life and work and family... the enemy was whispering in my mind:

"You can't make them happy, they'll always want more.  People's needs are a black hole that will suck the life right out of you.  Just give up, get off and be by yourself... leave them to thier own misery cause they'll never be satisfied anyway no matter what you do."

But then a still small voice says:  "Who said it was your job to make them happy?"

And I reply: "ummmmm... hmmmm."

"Isn't it my job to meet thier needs?"

"Yeah, You're right."

"And what is your job, son?"

"To let You love and bless them through me in any way You will..."

"That's right.  Good!  And what else is your job?"

"uhhhhhhh... nothing?"

"Right again, apart from loving me, and letting me love others through you, there is nothing more.  My yoke is easy.  My burden is light."

"I love You Papa."

"I love you son."

So I have a new litany in my truck and on my puters now from this conversation.  (See below)  I need to remind myself that not only is it impossible for me to meet everyone's needs, it isn't even my job!!  His yoke is easy.  His burden is light.

Not that I use this as an excuse to ignore or abandon anyone.  Far from it.  I just need to realize Jesus wants to love and bless people through me... He has specific people in mind.  One day it may be one or two, the next it may be thousands.  How many doesn't matter, it only matters that I allow Him to bless whosoever He will through me at all times, in His strength, by His prompting, in His perfect timing.

Ahhhh.... now that's a load off.

It is NOT my job to
fix all thier problems
or meet all their needs
or make them happy.

It IS my job to allow
You to love and bless
them through me
in whatever way You will.

No less and no more.
Your yoke is easy.
Your burden is light.

Control Freaks

My eleven-month-old son is a card-carrying control freak. This tendency of his to want things his way is why I had to clean cereal off the kitchen wall this morning. Since we began letting him feed himself, he wants to do this more and more. So when I approached his mouth with a spoonful of cereal, he swung his arm around and sent the cereal flying through the air. He’s a control freak. Not only does he want to be the primary decision-maker when it comes to how he eats, but also what he eats, where he crawls, when he gets his diaper changed, and the list goes on and on.

Caleb comes by this naturally. In fact we all do. We all come into the world as control freaks. Some of us may have developed more ingrained patterns than others for wanting to always be in control, but to some extent, we all like to be in charge. I know I do. I like to get behind the wheel and drive a car. I like to hold the remote control when I watch TV. In the technology world where I spend much of my day, there is a push to make computer programs, interfaces, and websites (and everything else) customizable. That's because we like to be in control. I admit that I like to customize (basically a euphemism for “control”) my electronic spaces as well as my physical spaces such as my office furniture. I'm a control freak.

These examples may seem like no big deal, and I suppose you’re right. However, being a control freak can get ugly when we start trying to control situations that are impossible to control. Want an example? When we attempt to take charge of our spiritual growth as if it all depends on our efforts, then we might as well be trying to pole vault the moon. Committing to read the Bible more, pray more, attend church more, or give more money to our church are all good activities that might appear to advance our walk with God. Yet, these disciplines are only spiritually beneficial when we relax in our true identity in Christ, relinquish control of the spiritual growth process, and rest with an attitude of complete dependence upon Christ. While, God is responsible for our growth as a Christian, we are responsible for giving up control and then resting in His ability to live His life in and through us.

Philippians 1:6 says,
"There has never been the slightest doubt in my mind that the God who started this great work in you would keep at it and bring it to a flourishing finish on the very day Christ Jesus appears." (Message)

Who will bring it to a flourishing finish? God has promised that He will do this. He who started the work will be faithful to complete it in you. Dr. Bill Gillham likes to say, “God’s job description is that He runs things.” ...so let's let Him do his job. He’s quite good at it don't you know.

My son Caleb will sometimes slap good food away and protest when I have to restrain him to give him medicine. Why? He does it because he doesn’t understand that I would never give him that might hurt him. I will only give him that which he needs and would benefit him. It’s the same with our heavenly Father. We can confidently give up control of our life to God when we understand His character—that He will always do the most redemptive, constructive thing for us. If we doubt His goodness, then it’s because we can’t see the big picture from His perspective. God’s character is worth trusting.

Just as it is impossible for Caleb to live his life in his own resources, it is impossible for a Christian to walk with God on his own resources. So if you are a control freak, then slow down, stop, and repeat after me “Father, I give up being a control-freak. I know that in my heart I truly long to trust you to live through me, so that’s what I’m going to do.” Now, sit down and relax because He will.

The Great Exchange

You gave God everything you were--"dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature" (Colossians 2:13). In turn, "God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins." In Him you have forgiveness, eternal life, righteousness, and acceptance. You used to be dead, but now you are alive--a brand new creation.

The best way I can explain this "great exchange" is to have you envision yourself as a caterpillar. God created caterpillars with the capacity to become something entirely different. Through the process of metamorphosis, ugly caterpillars can be transformed into beautiful butterflies. Likewise, when you are born again, you become a new creation. You become holy and totally acceptable in His sight. You stand in Christ's life and His righteousness.

"It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God--that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption." (1 Corinthians 1:30)

Freedom in Grace

For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. (Gal 5:1)

___________________

How often have we said, "I need to pray and read my bible more"? Doesn't it say, Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. (Col 4:2), and, For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. (Rom 15:4)?

And yet, does the very thought that, "I need to read my bible and pray more", cause a burden, because we have not been fulfilling the good law to read and pray? And so what, does praying and reading make us more acceptable to God?

Either way, we lose the joy of his grace. You are severed from Christ, you who would be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace. (Gal 5:4) When someone gives me a gift, it is no longer a gift if I try to pay for it. How merciful God has been with me, when I have tried to add to the only payment in full, the blood of Jesus, shed for me.

Better beyond measure, when our goal is to know Jesus and to abide in him. Then, directions to read Scriptures, and pray, are no longer burdens of law, robbing us of grace, but hopeful promises full of joy. "If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples" (John 8:31)

Lord Jesus, thank you for the gift of life, the grace that we are able to know you. Please forgive me for my foolish efforts to gain what you have freely given. Grant me the grace to rejoice in your indescribable gift, to abide in you.

Today's very great and precious promise:

Now to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due. And to the one who does not work but trusts him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness
(Rom 4:4-5)

Our True Identity - Forgiven

You are now living as a new creation, clothed in the righteousness of Christ. Therefore, you and I stand in the presence of God wearing His righteousness, not our own. You cannot perfect yourself or make yourself more pleasing to God. He has already accomplished everything for you in Jesus.

"For there is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." Romans 8:1
